That’s a Wrap…For Now :)

Welcome to the Finale of Unemployed Pandas!

Drawing comics is always an adventure. It all starts with a handful of character designs and an inkling of an idea. Writers and artists debate and deliberate on what should and shouldn’t happen, until a looming deadline ultimately decides the fate of the story. Step by step and line by line, the characters and creative team journey to discover each new day together.

Working on Unemployed Pandas was no exception to this process, but it was definitely unique in its experience. It was my first time truly collaborating with a respected creative, aka my friend Mervyn. Without him, I would have been stuck many times in a typical artist’s trap of not releasing artwork until it was finished. Thanks to him, I learned to trust my instincts a little bit more, as well as simply learn to trust another human being.  I also learned a lot about getting over myself and just getting things done.  (I suppose that’s a funny thing to say, even when the comic went on a 4 year hiatus ^_^; )

Well, it feels wonderful to close this chapter at this moment. Even with the end, the finale of Unemployed Pandas has sparked new ideas in my head that are urging me to be realized. I am grateful that I’m in a situation that is going to allow me to draw them out soon.

Thank you, as always, for sticking with me on this comics journey. Without readers, am I really drawing comics? I appreciate you guys ^_^

Sincerely,

PMBQ

Four Years Later…

Hello there! PMBQ here. I wanted to take some time to catch everyone up on what happened to this Unemployed Pandas comic, even though it has been four years since my previous update!

I’m just going to come clean and call myself out here. I have an embarrassing track record of not being great at finishing my personal online web projects. I can blame it on the nature of artists, who always love the newest and latest thing (and in my case, usually it’s a new personal web project).

In the specific case of the Unemployed Pandas, what happened is that both Mervyn and I became Employed Pandas in 2009 (which is when this comic was last updated). We got engrossed in the exciting world of corporate life, full of interesting things like multi-layered bureacracy, middle management, IT departments, smartphones, and checking our email 24/7 (because we were part of a global business that ran 24/7). Not to mention, it was pretty darn fun to collect a regular paycheck and not live month-to-month as I have been used to doing for most of my career!

When I first started to live the life of a day-jobber, I had actually already scripted and storyboarded out the end of the Unemployed Pandas comic.  It was just a handful of updates away from being completely finished, and I fully intended to have it done before 2009 ended.

Clearly it didn’t happen, and somehow four years quickly went by. During that time, I got engrossed in many large-scale website projects, learned intriguing web technologies, and collaborated with extremely charismatic and talented people.  Also, I was finally in a stable financial situation that allowed me to finally consider starting a family (which I did in 2010, I now have a wonderful son named Griffith).

I suppose that all that counts as a decent set of excuses. However, I just have to break this vicious cycle of unfinished projects.  Therefore, I am officially declaring that I will be finishing and posting the last few comics for Unemployed Pandas in these upcoming weeks.

Not to mention, things just come full circle, and I am back to the life of a freelancer. I was joking with Mervyn that it only seems appropriate to work on this comic when I’m in somewhat of an unemployed state :)

All righty! Thanks for coming along for this ride, and I hope you’ll see the end of Unemployed Pandas through with me!

Change is in the Air

PMBQ, Mervyn, Ninja Panda, Samurai PandaMany apologies for the disruption in updates as of late.

We’ve been busy with a few changes in both of our lives, and have had to temporarily shift some priorities around.

This is just a quick note to let you all know that we’re still dedicated to this project, it just can’t continue on the same schedule as it has in the past few months.

Please stay tuned for future announcements regarding the direction of this comic, as well as exactly what has been going on as of late :)

Thanks for bearing with us as we get through these sudden changes.  We’re still here and will continue to tell the story of your favorite pandas.

October Gift Arts

Sorry for the tardiness this past week.  Just had a lot of unexpected meetings and freelance work pop up.  I’m usually pretty busy in general, but it really wasespecially busy!!!

It was recently my birthday, and I received some pretty nifty gift art from Hawaiian cartoonist/good friend Jon J. Murakami. (Hopefully you guys remember the guest strip he did in July.)  It was so great, I just had to post it :)

murakami_giftI figure it’s also a good time to post a nifty Ninja Panda fanart from another longtime friend, Long Vo (who you might recall has a webcomic called L33tass):

Hopefully, these fantastic gift arts make up a little bit for my own lateness + missed comics this week ^_^;

End of Summer 2009

picture-8Today marks the last day of “Unemployment Benefits,” at least for this summer.  It’s been a lot of fun to depict the various activities that the Pandas have been doing lately, so I really hope you’ve enjoyed that.

August will be a new month with a new story arc. Will Ninja Panda find work? Will Samurai Panda make any progress with his bakery? Will there be a new Unemployed Panda?

Tune in next Monday to find out :)

Also, THANK YOU to everyone who came by and supported us at the summer conventions. We had tons of fun meeting old and new fans, as well as creating a lot of fun art. Although it has been a challenging year for us (as it has been for everyone), we’ve still managed to keep our chins up and have a good time. Despite the economy and whatever might be going on in your lives, we hope you are doing the same.

See ya  next week!
